Three Common Misunderstandings Of Self-Organized Teams – Forbes

Part of my consulting work with clients is helping them adopt Agile and lean software development practices, which among other things means fostering and putting in place self-organizing teams.

“Self-organization” can be a very loaded term, and when there is not a discussion within organizations around what this means, teams will typically create their own convenient meaning for it. In some organizations where the culture has a lot of directivity by management teams, I sometimes even see the term “self-organized teams” become weaponized in different ways, which I will tell you more about later.

Building Capacity In Others As A Co-Creative Leader – Forbes.com

Early in my years as a consultant and change agent in organizations, I noticed a pattern I like to call “the Moses effect”: When I began consulting engagements, there were times where it was almost as if the waters parted upon my arrival, so that the change we were working on could happen.

The problem was that as soon as I walked away, the waters returned to their original bed. I wondered for the longest time why this was happening, and one day the answer came to me. I was not building the capacity in the people that would allow them to sustain the change we were making.

Why Understanding Other Perspectives Is A Key Leadership Skill – Forbes.com

In one of the management courses I deliver, as well as with the clients I coach, one of my favorite topics to cover is understanding perspectives.

Participants often tell me this topic is one of their key takeaways. For me, there’s great value in recognizing different perspectives in conversations because these enable us to hear and react to things very differently. One of my close friends often says: “Change how a situation occurs to you, change how you will respond to the situation.”
